My perspective on coaching like everyone is influenced by my education and experience. I have taught Physical Education at all levels from elementary to college and I have coached all levels from beginner to professionals on three continents. Five of the coaches I have been on the coaching staff with have moved on to the NHL as assistant coaches, one coached Russia in the Olympics and another is the head of hockey development in the Czech Republic. I have been to Europe about twenty times and seen how they develop players.
In a hockey game you are constantly in transition between three game situations; offense, defense and loose puck and within in these situations you must transition game playing roles from puck carrier to puck support on offense and checking the puck carrier to covering away from the puck on defense. A complete hockey player needs to be able to be able to read what situation he/she is in and have the skills of all the four game playing roles.
Coaches
Coaches need to plan practices that teach the players to read the game and have the skills to play both offense and defense. Practices must include individual and partner drills, small area games and transition games that prepare all of the players to play in every zone in the three game situations and all four game playing roles.
Parents
Parents are partners in youth hockey. At the younger ages they supply all of the equipment and drive their children to practice and games. It is important that parents remain parents and don't take over the role of the coach on the drive to and from the rink. Support and encourage your son/daughter and remember they are playing hockey because they love the game and for the experience of being on a team that is working together for a common goal. Tom,
I am a good friend of Mike and he told me to contact you about a book that goes through training games and drills for kids. My son is a first year squirt playing on a AA team in Michigan. I would really like to get ahold of the book...I can also give you my ups number so I can get as soon as possible.
